The Summer Edit has landed

Let's be honest about British summer. You get about forty genuinely good evenings a year, and at least ten of them happen while you're at work. The rest deserve better than a wobbly bistro set and a citronella candle from the garage.

So we've pulled together The Summer Edit. Twenty-two pieces, hand-picked for the way summer actually gets lived in. Long dinners that drift outside. Chairs you fall asleep in. The bits and pieces that make the table look like you tried, even when you didn't.

Dinner moves outside

The centrepiece is the Senza outdoor dining table from Richmond, a proper 220cm table that seats the whole family and then some. Pair it with the Nuba dining chairs and you've got the kind of setup that makes neighbours suddenly very friendly around 7pm.

If lounging is more your speed, the Amalfi five seater set is the one everyone asks about. Fair warning: we have exactly one left, and it will not hang around. The Palma set and the Capri three seater are cut from the same cloth, and they're nearly as scarce.

When the sun goes down

This is where summer gets good. A fire pit turns a chilly 9pm into the best part of the day. We've got two, the Davey and the Quinn, both in black steel, both the sort of thing you'll use far more than you expect. They earn their keep well into autumn, too.

Add a hurricane lantern or two on the table and you're set until midnight. They're cheap enough that you may as well buy three. You'll thank us.

The finishing touches

A summer table needs something green in something lovely. The aged stone vase and the Bloomville ginger jar do the heavy lifting here, and the Amalfi vase ties back to the outdoor sets rather neatly.

And for carrying the summer palette indoors, the Palm Grove cushion in teal and rust is one of the easiest changes you can make this month.

Gemma's styling tip

Cluster your lanterns in odd numbers at one end of the table rather than spacing them evenly. It looks gathered and relaxed instead of laid out with a ruler, and it leaves room for the food, which is rather the point.

A few of these pieces are one-offs, so if something catches your eye, don't sleep on it. And if you'd rather not wait in for a delivery, you can order online and collect from Tamworth, Broadway or Ludlow.
