How long does a sofa take to deliver in the UK?

Most UK sofas take 6 to 12 weeks, because the sofa you order does not exist yet. It gets built after you pay. If you buy something already sitting in a warehouse, you are usually looking at 10 to 14 days instead.

That gap catches people out. You walk into a showroom in September, sit on something you love, and find out at the till that it lands in December. Here is what is actually going on, and how to work out the date you will really get.

The three routes a sofa takes to your living room

Almost every sofa sold in Britain arrives by one of three routes, and the route decides the wait far more than the retailer does.

Made to order. You pick the frame, then the fabric, then the leg finish, and a factory builds that exact combination for you. Nothing is made until the order lands. This is how most of the high street works, and it is why published lead times of 6 to 8 weeks for fabric and 8 to 10 weeks for leather are completely normal. Several UK manufacturers state these times openly on their own delivery pages.

In stock. The sofa is already built, already in a warehouse, already counted. The only thing standing between you and it is a delivery slot. This is where the 10 to 14 day figures come from. The trade-off is that you take the fabric and configuration as it comes.

Flat pack. Boxed, courier-delivered, assembled by you. Fastest of the lot, sometimes next day. Also the narrowest choice, and a different construction standard to a fully upholstered frame.

Nobody tells you which route your sofa is on unless you ask. It is the single most useful question in the shop.

Why made to order takes as long as it does

The wait is not a queue. Six weeks of it is real work.

The frame is cut and assembled first, usually from kiln-dried hardwood. Then it is sprung, filled and upholstered by hand, which is the slow part and the part that cannot be rushed without the finish suffering. Before any of that starts, the fabric you chose has to be in the mill's stock and shipped to the factory. If your fabric is on back order, your sofa has not started.

Then it joins a delivery run. Two-person furniture delivery works on regional routes rather than individual drops, so a sofa finished on a Tuesday might wait ten days for the van to be in your area.

Four things reliably add weeks:

• Leather. Hides are ordered against your specific job and take longer to arrive than fabric. Two to four weeks on top is standard.
• A corner or modular layout. More sections, more components, and every piece has to be finished before any of it ships.
• Anything customised. A different arm, a contrast piping, a bespoke size. Each change takes the job out of the standard production run.
• Ordering between September and November. Everyone in Britain wants their sofa by Christmas. Factory slots fill from about mid-September and lead times stretch accordingly.

How to work out your actual delivery date

Retailers quote a range because the range is honest. You can still narrow it down before you commit.

Ask whether the sofa is in stock or made to order, and get the answer in writing on your order confirmation rather than as a verbal estimate at the counter. Ask specifically whether your chosen fabric is in stock, because that is the most common hidden delay and the salesperson may not know without checking.

If you are ordering more than one piece, ask how the retailer handles mixed lead times. Most deliver the whole order together on the longest lead time, so a footstool at six weeks will hold back a sofa at three.

Finally, check what happens if the date slips. Under the Consumer Rights Act you are entitled to delivery within a reasonable time, and a retailer who is confident in their dates will put them in writing without hesitating.

The Christmas maths, if that is what you are working towards

Count backwards from the date you need it and add a fortnight of slack.

For a made-to-order sofa at 8 to 12 weeks, the last safe ordering window for Christmas closes around the end of September. For leather, it has effectively already closed. For in-stock furniture at 10 to 14 days, you have until roughly the first week of December, although delivery slots in the fortnight before Christmas book out early and the last available date is usually gone by late November.

If it is already October and you want seating for Christmas, in-stock is the only route that reliably works.
